Trimester 1

  • Unit 1.1 - Basic Artistic Skills


The student will create a balanced design using overlapping shapes.


The student will create a cut-paper design/ collage.


The students will create a positive/ negative space flip-over design.


The students will create multi-media composition based on nature observation.


The students will create landscape using multiple techniques. (warm and cool colors)


  • Unit 1.2 - Exploration of Cultures

Students will create representations of cultural artworks. (i.e., mask design, aboriginal works, Native American....)

Trimester 2

  • Unit 2.1- Observation and Inspiration from Masters


Students will be introduced to a variety of exemplary artist’s work.


Students will create a winter landscape based on the work of Monet or another artist representing a winter landscape.


  • Unit 2.2- Observation and Inspiration from Masters


Students will be introduced to a variety of exemplary artist’s work.


Students will create a winter landscape based on the work of Monet or another artist representing a winter landscape.


  • Unit 2.3- Dimensional Design Techniques

The student will visually solve a Design based problem, such as redesigning a flag, creating a logo for a unique company or themselves.

Trimester 3

  • Unit 3.1- Creating Patterns


Functional Object Design (China Plate Design, Shoes, Cell Phone Cover...) The student will make a connection between Visual Arts design to create functional objects.


The student will learn to use shapes to create a collage. Using repeating shapes and colors. (Symmetrical or Asymmetrical) (Quilt square, Shape manipulation.)


The student will learn to use the wax- resist technique, and knowledge of art elements pattern and rhythm to create a design such as Pysansky Eggs, Native


American Patterns, Line exploration.


The student will learn to use the resist-technique (Wax resist, glue resist) and apply to a design problem. (Fish Design, Landscape, Abstract Design)

Students will create a symmetrical design inspired by nature, using color, shape & line.(Butterfly, Insects,)


  • Unit 3.2- Design Through Observation


The student will create Architectural Drawings using Art Element Shape/ Line, to develop an understanding and relationship of shapes in building design.

The student will create an observational drawing . Such as Spring Flowers, Poinsettias, Gourds...blending cray-pas, overlapping.


The students will create an observational nature study (birds, landscape, insects... Landscape/seascape incorporating Lighthouse).


  • Unit 3.3- Elements of Design & Artistic Style

Students will create an artwork that evokes an Expression. (i.e., clown portrait, art that illustrates an emotion, emotional pumpkins.)
