Trimester 1

  • Unit 1.1 - Basic Artistic Skills


The student will use color, shape, and/or texture in a drawing, such as creating an apple basket using crayons or decorate pumpkins to express a feeling.

The student will experiment with a variety of strategies and techniques in order to create optical illusion (cut paper) and to create texture such as feathers.


The student will use watercolor and intersecting circles to create new shapes.


  • Unit 1.2 - Tools, Techniques, and Processes


The student will use rulers, circles, and crayons to create a repeat pattern with directional line (vertical, horizontal, diagonal).


The student will apply the understanding of directional line and patterns to create items, such as Native American rugs.


The student will create and/or examine clothing/rugs to make the connection between Visual Arts design and other disciplines and to create functional objects.


Trimester 2

  • Unit 2.1- Connecting Drawing to Literature and Culture


The student will use the basic drawing elements (color, shape and texture) to create realism in their drawing , such as a cardinal.


The students will connect artwork to literature and the cultural effects upon aspects of design, such as drawing the Gingerbread man from the Jan Brett book or Bears.

The student will illustrate a scene which tells a story through drawing.


  • Unit 2.2-Connecting Drawing to Literature and Culture


The student will use the basic drawing elements (color, shape and texture) to create realism in their drawing , such as a cardinal.

  • Unit 2.3- Size & Proportion in Drawing Patterns & Symmetry


The student will view real world objects and art work and determine the contribution of the artist in the creative process and the design.

Trimester 3

  • Unit 3.1- Design through Observation


The student will use radial design to draw simple objects, such as flowers, color burst, fireworks.


The student will create a drawing after observing the subtle differences in photos, such as a robin (vs. cardinal), dinosaurs, or turtles.


The student will use size and color (watercolor) to design an object, such as one spring flower.


  • Unit 3.2- Elements of Design & Artistic Style


The student will create an object, such as a cake, explain their design and compare their design elements to the work of others.

The student will examine an object such as a spider in a web, discuss/read about the design elements to gain understanding and then draw the object.
