FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 26, 2008

The Burrillville School Department announced today that due to a possible threat written on a note and left in a school bathroom at Burrillville High School today, a series of steps is being taken in response to that threat. The note indicated that "there will be a bomb" during Thursday night’s Parent /Teacher Conferences at the high school.

In response to this latest threat, the school is taking the following actions:

  • State Bomb Squad members will be sweeping the building with bomb-sniffing dogs on Wednesday afternoon.
  • The high school will be locked on Wednesday evening.
  • Students’ bags will be searched when they enter the school Thursday morning.
  • Teachers will check their rooms for any unusual or out-of-place items in their rooms when they leave Thursday night.
  • All classrooms will be locked when teachers leave for the day.
  • No one will be allowed into the building until just prior to the start of Parent/Teacher conferences, which begin at 5:00PM.

Beginning on Thursday, the school will be taking some administrative steps to more closely supervise student movement in the building.

These steps are all being taken in consultation with the Burrillville Police Department and the State Bomb Squad personnel. The primary concern of everyone involved is to protect the safety of everyone who enters, attends, or works in the school.

Unfortunately, this recent spate of bomb threats has needlessly interrupted the education of the students of Burrillville High School, and caused a great deal of stress for the students, their families, and the staff who work at the high school. The School administration and Burrillville Police Department are working on additional steps to be taken to insure the safety of everyone in the school and to try and prevent these events from recurring.

An active investigation is currently underway regarding not only the latest threat, but several other threats that have occurred recently. There are significant criminal and school penalties associated with making threats to the public safety in a school, and the school administration and police are committed to prosecuting anyone involved in making these threats to the fullest extent possible under the law.
